Ford Focus - A Clear Winner

From its introduction in 2000, the Ford Focus was a really good car. It's had the styling, performance, value and body choices to make it a competitor in the crowded field of affordable small cars. The good news for drivers is that in its most recent release, it has become a truly great car. Ford has managed to maintain the value and performance that the Focus line is known for, and has now redesigned each of them to make them look better than ever. Focus is even available in an all-electric version for 2015, but more on that later.

The Focus is not only a better looking version of its prior self, the performance and feel of the car is much improved as well. The fact that Focus has attained the number two spot overall in the small car category (behind its brother the Fiesta), says a lot about the efforts that Ford has put into it in recent years. Focus is not only a fun car to drive, but its interior and exterior styling make it seem like it should cost a lot more than it does. And with a fuel efficiency of up to 40 mpg, it just keeps getting better.

Focus Body and Trim Levels

The Focus comes in a sedan and hatchback version. The sedan has four trim levels, while the 5-door hatchback has three - foregoing the base model version. The base model sedan is the S trim level and has plenty of features for a value-priced car. Focus S feels like you're getting a lot for your money with:

  • power windows, locks and mirrors
  • A/C
  • tilt/telescoping steering wheel
The sedan and hatchback both come in the SE trim, and add things like:
  • trip computer
  • automatic headlights
  • steering wheel audio controls

The SEL and Titanium trim levels introduce things like:

  • multi-color ambient lighting
  • full auto controls
  • cruise control
  • spoiler
  • upgraded audio system
Available on the Titanium version is a sport-tuned suspension and 18-inch alloy wheels for an even sportier ride. All models except for the S-level sedan offer a range of options that are usually only found on much more expensive cars. Things like heated leather seats, rearview camera, parking assist and 10-speaker audio make Focus feel like a luxury small car if there ever was one.

Performance and the Focus

The handling of the Focus can only be described as spectacular. With a lower center of gravity, improved suspension and a first-in-its-class torque vectoring control, Focus has the feel of a rally racecar instead of an economy car. A 2.0-liter 4 cylinder engine sends 160-hp to the Focus' front-wheel drive. The S and SE have a 5-speed manual transmission as standard, and the SEL and Titanium get a 6-speed automatic, which is an option on the S and SE. Fuel economy is pretty decent at 28 city and 38 highway, with an optional Super Fuel Economy package delivering up to 40 mpg on the highway.

All-Electric Focus SEV

Ford has decided to throw its hat into the suddenly popular all-electric vehicle ring with the 2015 Focus SEV. Rather than design a completely new car, Ford chose to convert the Focus and it may prove to be a smart move. By saving the expense of re-tooling an entire assembly line, the Focus SEV becomes that much more affordable. Powered by a 123-hp electric motor, the SEV will reach a top speed of 84 mph and have a range of around 70 miles on a charge. Charge time is 3-4 hours on 240 volts and up to 18 hours on 110-volt house current. As you can see, there's no need to focus here; the Ford Focus as a top car is a clear picture.
