Chevy Equinox - America's Top-Selling Mid-Size SUV
History of Equinox
The first generation Equinox (model years 2005-2009) launched in 2004 when Chevrolet introduced the Equinox to replace a mini SUV called the Tracker. This new mid-size SUV was a 2005 model year and shared GM's "Theta" unibody platform. Minimal changes took place the first few years, until 2008 when the Equinox LTZ and Sport models were rolled out. The LTZ shared the same 3.4 V6 with the LS and LT but was introduced as the new luxury model and had 17" chrome clad wheels. The Sport enjoyed a peppier 3.6 V6 engine, 18" wheels and a six-speed automatic transmission. The second generation Equinox (model years 2010 - current) went on sale in June of 2009. The 2010 also shared the Theta platform as earlier models, while benefitting from a complete redesign with a more fuel efficient engine lineup.

What's New with the Equinox
Bluetooth and steering wheel audio controls are now standard on LS while GM's new "MyLink" is now available on 1LT and standard on 2LT and LTZ. MyLink enables hands-free voice control of the audio system and Bluetooth enabled phones so drivers can make phone calls by simply pressing the steering wheel mounted button and saying the contact name. You can also verbally request songs by artist, or title, which are stored on your phone or USB flash drive. The song title, artist name, genre and album cover art are all displayed on the dashboard LCD screen. In addition, Smartphone users can stream music from Pandora internet radio or Stitcher SmartRadio web music services.
Equinox Power, Performance & Economy
The 2.4 liter, in-line 4 cylinder engine, which produces 182 hp and 172 lb ft of torque, is now standard with all trim levels. For added performance and towing capacity, an optional 3.0 liter V-6 engine with 264 hp and 214 lb ft of torque is available on 1LT and up models. Both engines have DOHC (dual overhead cams), are direct injected, and are coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission with standard front wheel drive. To enhance fuel economy and reduce engine rpm, the 4-cylinder includes a driver selected "Eco" mode option. This changes shift points, enabling the transmission to attain higher gears sooner. Current EPA estimates for the 4-cylinder are 22/32 (city/highway) for FWD and 20/29 with AWD. The V6 FWD is rated 17/24 or 16/23 with AWD.
Safety & Security is Equinox
The Equinox is heavily equipped with a number of safety features, including dual stage air bags, driver and front passenger air bags, and both seat-mounted and head curtain side impact air bags. The Equinox utilizes four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes (ABS) with Hill Start Assist that reduces vehicle "roll-back" on inclines, as well as StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control System with Traction Control, Electronic Trailer Sway Control and Rollover Mitigation that helps the Equinox stay on course. All trim levels also include a tire pressure monitoring system and integrated blind spot mirrors. It's no wonder why the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named Equinox a Top Safety Pick in 2010 and 2011!
